The Covid-19 lockdown has us all on edge, but perhaps this is the time off we’ve all been waiting for to let things cool off and relax. You finally have time to spend at home with your family, a few unproductive days don’t matter as much, and you can take a breather from the everyday hassle of a busy work life.
Pretty much everything these days is at a standstill, which is why your mental and physical health aren’t the only things that need extra maintenance, your car does, too.
So, listen up, folks! We know there’s nothing much you can do about the global pandemic, but what you can do is keep your car in a running condition.
So, here are some dos and don’ts from Fobbu to care for your vehicle during the days of countrywide lockdown!
Keep Your Car Running at Least Once a Week
If your car stays parked for way too long, the battery will lose charge. To prevent this, you need to start your car and keep it running for some time at least once a week.
We know, the country is on lockdown and it’s strictly advised not to drive around without a reason, which is why to have the engine running in place may be a good alternative to keep the electronics of your car going.
Keep the Moving Parts of the Car Well Lubricated
If your car’s been sitting for too long, there’s a good chance the parts are drying out. The oil settles, seals dry out, and ultimately they all cause damage to your vehicle.
Lubricate the moving parts regularly if your car sits idly for longer than two weeks. So, here’s the next advice for you: lubricate, lubricate, and lubricate.
Vent the Interior
When the car’s in use and you drive it around, the interior gets aired out pretty well. But when the car’s not in use for days, the interior can accumulate a foul smell.
So, make sure you clean the interior of the car care, leave the windows open for some time, and keep the AC running to vent any foul smell that may be building inside the car.
Covered spots are Your Saving Grace
Parking your car indoors or covered areas is ideal. However, if that is not possible give your car proper maintenance, clean the surface, and then cover it. Car covers will keep your car from collecting dust while they sit in the driveway.
But be sure to clean the car first. Covering up a dirty car will abrade the paint with time.
Keep the Car Clean
If your car’s parked out in open space, it will need regular car cleaning. You will have to clean it daily for tree sap or bird droppings since they are acidic in nature and can damage the car paint.
Don’t Use the Parking Brake
If you keep the parking brake engaged for too long, there’s a good chance the brake pads and rotor will be jammed against each other. You want to avoid that.
The parking brake collects moisture when engaged for too long, which causes it to stick. So, if you’re planning on leaving the car idle, don’t use the parking brake.
Don’t Park on Soft, Permeable Surfaces
Parking on soft surfaces with the tendency to store moisture will allow water particles to travel up into your car’s mechanics, causing it to corrode.
Hard concrete surfaces are the best place to park your car for extended periods of time. If you can’t find a spot on a concrete surface, you can park on gravel.
Don’t Park in the same spot for a long time
Parking in the same spot for a long time might result in flat spots on the tyres. ‘Flat spot’ refers to a badly worn section of a tyre tread. While this might not be physically visible at first, it could cause the driver to feel bumps, thumps, or vibrations while moving.
Moving the car, a little regularly can help avoid flat spots. The other option is to increase the tyre pressure by 3 psi, this will help the tyre retain its shape when standing for long.
At Fobbu, we believe in providing the best car care. Stay safe, stay healthy, and don’t forget your cars while coping with the pandemic.
